Salerno officials propose removing sand from Universo Beach

Technical experts from the Salerno Municipality have proposed the complete removal of sand from the Universo Beach area in Torrione due to widespread and structural non-compliance. Investigations revealed that the material used by the company Infratech for beach expansion and consolidation was unsuitable for its intended purpose, with fine material percentages reaching 12% to 15%, significantly exceeding the 5% limit.

The estimated cost to remove and dispose of approximately 14,800 cubic meters of sand is roughly one million euros. This figure includes costs for excavation, transport, and disposal at authorized facilities. The municipality intends to recover these funds through the contractor's insurance guarantees or by withholding outstanding payments.

The beach has remained closed since May, following concerns over material quality and potential health emergencies. Legal proceedings regarding contract termination and potential damages to the municipality are still pending.
