Salerno Universo Beach sand contamination issue
Overview
Technical experts in Salerno have proposed the complete removal of sand from Universo Beach in Torrione due to structural non-compliance. Investigations found that the material used by the contractor, Infratech, for beach expansion contained fine material percentages of 12% to 15%, significantly exceeding the permitted 5% limit. The beach has been closed since May due to concerns regarding material quality and potential health emergencies.
A report by the ‘Osservatorio Litorale’ association, Tradizione Futuro, estimated the removal and disposal of approximately 14,800 cubic meters of sand at roughly 1.4 million euros. This figure accounts for bacterial contamination and includes costs for excavation (66,000 euros), transport (up to 204,000 euros), and sorting and processing at a licensed plant (400,000 euros).
Following meetings between company executives and the municipal administration, the Infratech consortium has agreed to remove the unsuitable sand. The company intends to proceed without imposing additional costs on the public entity, though the process awaits final approval from the Campania Region’s Environment Office and further geological analyses. Salerno Mayor Vincenzo De Luca acted as a mediator to prevent a contractual breakdown, noting Infratech’s involvement in other strategic city contracts.
The situation remains under judicial scrutiny. Prosecutor Raffaele Cantone stated that investigations regarding the beach nourishment are not yet concluded and are expected to yield results shortly. Municipal technicians continue to criticize the consortium for project delays, lack of environmental monitoring, and failure to implement required improvements.
