Matteo Salvini addresses Lega party tensions and Italian rail projects
Matteo Salvini, leader of the Lega party, is facing internal pressure from the party's northern wing, led by Lombardy Governor Attilio Fontana and Massimiliano Romeo. Critics have called for a reorganization or for Salvini to step aside following declining poll numbers. Salvini has responded by stating he is working to ‘strengthen the team’ and calling for unity rather than internal disputes.
In infrastructure news, significant progress is being made on major Italian rail projects. The Salerno–Reggio Calabria high-speed line has reached a milestone with the TBM Leucosia completing the 800-meter Serra Lunga tunnel, while the TBM Mireille has begun work on the Sicignano tunnel. Additionally, work continues on the new Pigneto station in Rome, a €230 million project designed to create a major transport hub connecting regional lines with Metro C.
In regional cooperation, the mayors of Reggio Calabria and Messina have initiated a new institutional partnership to promote shared development and connectivity across the Strait.
