Salmon fishing regulations updated in Idaho and Alaska

Regional wildlife agencies in Idaho and Alaska have announced updated fishing regulations for the 2026 salmon seasons due to concerns regarding fish abundance and escapement.

In Idaho, the fall Chinook season opens on August 18, 2026, for the Clearwater, Snake, and Salmon rivers. Due to a projected return of approximately 26,000 adult fall Chinook—which includes a lower-than-average number of natural-origin fish—regulations have changed. Anglers are limited to three adult fall Chinook per day, with only one allowed to be adipose-intact (unclipped). The total possession limit is nine adults, with only three allowed to be unclipped.

In Alaska, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is maintaining a bag and possession limit of two coho salmon (16 inches or greater) for the Kenai River drainage from September 1 through November 30, 2026. This precautionary measure follows indications of below-average coho salmon abundance in Cook Inlet and uncertainty regarding the 2026 return. The reduction aims to ensure adequate escapement and long-term sustainability for the species.
