Salmonella outbreak in fresh eggs affects Spain and Portugal
At least 13 people in Spain have suffered salmonella poisoning after consuming fresh domestic eggs contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis. The European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) has classified the incident as a serious alert.
Authorities have successfully withdrawn the affected batch from the market, and officials from the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) consider the situation under control. The contaminated lot was not limited to Spain; it was also distributed in Portugal.
While the specific brand, the exact number of cartons removed, and the specific distribution regions have not been disclosed to avoid unnecessary alarm, the product is no longer considered an active risk to the public as it has been removed from the commercial distribution circuit.
