Salmonella Enteritidis outbreaks in eggs
Overview
Recent food safety alerts have identified Salmonella Enteritidis contamination in egg supplies across Europe.
In the United Kingdom, the Food Standards Agency issued an urgent warning regarding eggs imported from the Ukrainian producer Yasensvit Ltd. This contamination has been linked to at least 36 confirmed cases of food poisoning in England. The recall targets specific products with the shell stamp code 3UA1012066, which reached the market through wholesalers, food manufacturers, and small retailers.
Separately, an outbreak involving domestic fresh eggs in Spain and Portugal has triggered a serious alert via the European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF). Authorities have identified the source as a poultry farm in Mainar, Zaragoza, belonging to the Virgen del Rosario group. Testing confirmed ‘Salmonella Enteritidis’ in two of the farm’s eight poultry houses, which contain over one million hens.
The outbreak resulted in thirteen people in Vitoria-Gasteiz suffering poisoning, with three requiring hospitalization before being discharged. While the affected batches were distributed to Spain, France, and Portugal, authorities have withdrawn the products from the market. Although the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) considers the situation under control, consumer organizations have criticized officials for not immediately releasing specific brand names and lot numbers to assist consumers in identifying contaminated products.
