Salmonella outbreak in Val Trompia schools affects 89 people

A salmonella outbreak in several schools in the Val Trompia region of Brescia, Italy, has resulted in 89 symptomatic cases, including children, parents, and school staff. Currently, 14 children are hospitalized, with nine at Spedali Civili di Brescia and five at Poliambulanza. Health authorities report that the children's conditions are stable or improving.

Laboratory tests on the hospitalized patients have confirmed the presence of salmonella. Investigations are ongoing to determine if the bacteria were present in school meals served between September 10 and September 11. Specific meals under scrutiny include pasta with cherry tomatoes and mozzarella, as well as baked fish.

Local administrations have preemptively suspended meal services from the responsible catering company, switching to alternative cooking centers. The Carabinieri's NAS unit and ATS Brescia are conducting investigations into the catering center to establish the origin of the infection and determine potential responsibilities.
