Salmonella outbreak in Val Trompia schools

Overview

A salmonella outbreak linked to school meals in the Val Trompia region of Brescia, Italy, has affected an increasing number of people. Initially reported with 89 symptomatic cases, including children, parents, and staff, the number of affected individuals rose to at least 117 by September 18.

The outbreak is primarily associated with meals served on September 10 and 11, 2026, at nurseries, kindergartens, and primary schools. Specific menu items under investigation include baked fish and pasta with cherry tomatoes and mozzarella. As of the latest reports, 13 children born between 2022 and 2025 have been hospitalized, though their conditions are described as stable or improving. Local administrations have suspended services from the catering company involved, switching to alternative cooking centers.

On October 10, the Brescia Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation into potential negligent injuries. The investigation targets several municipalities, including Concesio, Marcheno, Inzino, Magno, Gardone Val Trompia, and Sarezzo. Approximately 120 people have fallen ill, with about 15 requiring hospitalization.

Initial suspicions focus on cherry tomatoes used in the meals. Markas, the catering company managing the Inzino cooking center, noted that a specific lot of cherry tomatoes from G&V Ortaggi in Gela, Sicily, was recalled by the Ministry of Health on September 23 due to salmonella contamination. The Carabinieri's NAS unit is examining the food supply chain to determine if this specific lot is linked to the illnesses in Val Trompia.
