Salmonella outbreak linked to broccoli sprouts reaches 32 cases

A Salmonella outbreak linked to broccoli sprouts produced by Evergreen Fresh Sprouts LLC has expanded to 32 confirmed cases. The outbreak, caused by the Salmonella Bovismorbificans strain, has now been reported in six states: Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.

Three individuals have been hospitalized, though no deaths have been reported. While the FDA confirmed the sprouts were primarily distributed in Idaho, Montana, and Washington, new illnesses have emerged in Minnesota and Oregon. Laboratory testing in Washington and Montana has established a direct link between the recalled product and the infections through whole genome sequencing.

The CDC notes that the actual number of infections may be higher than the current count, as many individuals recover without seeking medical care or undergoing testing. The affected sprouts were sold to various retailers, including grocery stores, restaurants, and food service customers.
