Global Salmonella and E. coli foodborne illness outbreaks
Overview
Health authorities in several countries are managing multiple Salmonella outbreaks linked to various food products. In France, over 80 people were infected with Salmonella Enteritidis, primarily in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Île-de-France regions, linked to pumpkin seeds. In the United Kingdom, investigations into Salmonella Enteritidis clusters involving imported eggs resulted in hundreds of cases, including one death.
In the United States, investigations have expanded significantly regarding contaminated sprouts. While an outbreak involving Evergreen Fresh Sprouts LLC was linked to 32 cases of Salmonella Bovismorbificans across six states, a larger multi-pathogen outbreak has emerged.
As of October 1, 2026, the CDC and FDA reported that 76 people across 16 U.S. states have been sickened by an outbreak involving both E. coli (strain O26:H11) and Salmonella Agona. Six individuals have been hospitalized. The illnesses, occurring between May 31 and September 7, are linked to alfalfa and radish sprouts produced by Everything Sprouts LLC, as well as Berlin Seeds-branded alfalfa sprouting seeds (specifically seed lot SAL2-24JB).
Cases have been reported in a wide range of states, including Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Washington, and Wisconsin, with Minnesota reporting the highest number of illnesses. Three patients were reported to have been infected with both pathogens.
