US salmonella outbreaks affect eggs and jalapeño peppers
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed a multistate salmonella outbreak linked to jalapeño peppers grown in Sinaloa, Mexico. At least 345 people in 27 states have fallen ill, 36 have been hospitalized and no deaths have been reported. The peppers were distributed in the United States by Coast Citrus Distributors, which has voluntarily recalled the product and notified restaurant customers, many of which have removed the peppers from their menus.
A separate salmonella outbreak tied to shell eggs has sickened 98 people, with 26 hospitalizations across 17 states. The eggs were produced by Midwest Poultry Services in Texas; more than 1.5 million cartons were recalled. The recalled cartons were sold under the brands Simple Truth, Brookshire’s, Country Morning, Kroger and Cal‑Maine and carry best‑by dates of July 20 to August 17, 2026. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the CDC are jointly investigating both outbreaks. No deaths have been reported from either the jalapeño or the egg-related outbreak.
