Salmonella outbreaks linked to eggs reported in UK and US

Health authorities in the United Kingdom and the United States have reported significant salmonella outbreaks linked to egg consumption.

In the UK, the UK Health Security Agency and the Food Standards Agency are investigating three distinct Salmonella Enteritidis clusters. One cluster in England has resulted in 322 confirmed cases and one death, with investigations pointing toward a link to imported eggs. Other clusters have reported 186 and 41 cases respectively, involving various food outlets such as restaurants and cafes. Officials state that while the investigation is ongoing, the overall risk to the general public remains low.

In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has closed a multistate outbreak involving recalled shell eggs. The final report confirmed 134 illnesses across 18 states and 34 hospitalizations, with no deaths reported. The outbreak spanned a nine-month period from November 2025 through August 2026. Genetic sequencing via PulseNet confirmed the cases were linked to a shared food source, and the Food and Drug Administration conducted traceback efforts to identify the source in the Midwest.
