Salmonella outbreaks linked to pumpkin seeds in France and broccoli sprouts in the US

Health authorities in France and the United States are investigating separate Salmonella outbreaks linked to specific food products.

In France, more than 80 people have been infected by Salmonella Enteritidis, with cases reported across 10 regions, most notably in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Île-de-France. Investigations by Santé Publique France and the Ministry of Health have linked the outbreak to pumpkin seeds processed in Lot-et-Garonne. The contaminated seeds, which include various mixes and raw seeds, were distributed through the Grand Frais retail chain. A product recall and withdrawal have been issued.

In the United States, the FDA and CDC have confirmed 22 Salmonella infections across Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Washington. Traceback investigations identified Evergreen Fresh Sprouts LLC of Moyie Springs, Idaho, as the source of the contaminated broccoli sprouts. The company initiated a recall on September 4 following a positive test in Montana. The specific pathogen identified is Salmonella Bovismorbificans. While two people were hospitalized, no deaths have been reported.
