Salobreña proposes new road and housing development
The Mayor of Salobreña, Javier Ortega, has proposed an urban redevelopment plan for the UE-S3 area at the town's northern entrance. The project, part of the Plan de Reforma Interior (PRI), aims to create a new avenue to improve traffic flow between the beach areas and the national road, linking into Calle Antequera and Calle Extramuros.
Of the 14,409.64 square meters involved, the Mayor stated that only 31 percent is earmarked for residential use, with the remainder dedicated to public spaces, amenities, and infrastructure. The plan includes the construction of 108 dwellings, 21 of which will be subsidized social housing. The Junta de Andalucía’s environmental authority has already issued a resolution stating the project does not require a strategic environmental assessment.
However, the local citizens' group Cal y Caña has formally opposed the plan, submitting 24 objections. The group argues that the development will negatively impact the urban panorama near the old town and the castle, and claims the project exceeds permitted building density under the General Urban Development Plan. Mayor Ortega has rejected these criticisms, maintaining that the project adheres to all regulations and serves as a necessary expansion for public access and facilities.
