Argentine provinces move to decouple 2027 local elections from national contests
Several Argentine provinces are establishing independent electoral calendars for 2027 to decouple local elections from national presidential contests.
In Salta, the government confirmed that elections will be held separately, likely in May, allowing Governor Gustavo Sáenz to seek reelection without being tied to the national presidential race. Similarly, Santa Fe Governor Maximiliano Pullaro is planning a schedule with primaries in April and general elections in June to ensure provincial issues remain the primary focus.
In Chaco, a political debate has emerged regarding the electoral calendar. The opposition, led by Jorge Capitanich, has proposed a constitutional amendment to unify provincial and national elections to reduce public spending. However, Governor Leandro Zdero has rejected this proposal, defending the separation of elections to maintain distinct political agendas. Juanchi García, Mayor of Machagai, suggested that the savings from electoral unification should instead be used to subsidize energy tariffs.
Corrientes has also joined the trend of decoupling its local elections from the national cycle.
