El Salvador deploys troops to Haiti following disappearance of four technicians

El Salvador has intensified its military presence in Haiti following an October 18 ambush in Croix-des-Bouquets that left four Salvadoran aviation technicians missing. President Nayib Bukele has deployed a contingent of over 2,000 soldiers, including special forces, armored vehicles, and aerial support, to locate the personnel and combat criminal gangs.

The Haitian National Police (PNH) reported recovering the technicians' burned vehicle in the Santo neighborhood during an operation on November 2. Despite the involvement of specialized units, including drones and SWAT teams, the four individuals remain missing. Salvadoran Vice President Félix Ulloa defended the mission at the XXX Ibero-American Summit, stating the presence is a legitimate bilateral arrangement with Haitian authorities rather than an occupation.

Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé expressed support for the Salvadoran intervention, noting that the government is committed to restoring state authority and reclaiming territories from gangs. He emphasized a unified strategy involving the PNH, the Haitian Armed Forces, and the Gang Suppression Force (GSF). Meanwhile, Salvadoran Foreign Minister Alexandra Hill Tinoco and Haitian counterpart Raina Forbin met in Madrid to reinforce security cooperation and exchange best practices in fighting organized crime.
