Salvamar expands lifeguard training and issues sea safety alert in Salvador

The Salvador Maritime Rescue Coordination (Salvamar), part of the municipal public safety office, is conducting an intensive training cycle for its 240 lifeguards during the low‑season winter months. The program includes first‑aid, aquatic rescue techniques, physical conditioning and updates on international lifesaving standards, aiming to prepare the team for the higher beach traffic of spring and summer.

At the same time, Salvamar has warned residents and tourists to avoid swimming on the coming weekend because a strong swell is expected to generate waves up to three metres and powerful rip currents along Salvador’s coastline. The alert advises the public, especially children and inexperienced swimmers, to stay on the sand, while only highly experienced water‑sports athletes should consider entering the water with proper safety gear.

Both actions are part of Salvamar’s ongoing effort to reduce drownings and improve beach safety for the city’s residents and visitors.
