El Salvador beach safety initiatives

Entities: Plan Vacación 2026 · El Salvador · Luis Alonso Amaya · Pedro Belinchón · National Civil Protection System

Overview

In July 2026, Salvador’s maritime authority Salvamar announced an expansion of lifeguard training programs and issued a sea‑safety alert for coastal areas. By early August, the National Civil Protection reported that no drownings occurred on beaches, lakes or water parks during the Vacation 2026 holiday period. Authorities initially recorded 44 water rescues—37 in deep water—and kept lifeguard patrols in place until 7 p.m. to maintain safety.

By August 7, updated statistics from Civil Protection indicated that while the zero-death outcome remained, the total number of water rescues had risen to 59. Additionally, the country reported a decrease in traffic accidents compared to the previous year, despite recording 17 fatalities and 307 accidents.

Experts continue to caution that while increased lifeguard presence contributes to these outcomes, it does not eliminate drowning risks, maintaining calls for clearer signage, public education, and broader preventive measures.
