Salvamont Romania rescues 667 tourists during August peak season

In August 2026, mountain rescue teams in Romania conducted 542 rescue and first aid operations, resulting in the salvation of 667 people. During this peak summer tourism period, 14 individuals lost their lives in the mountains.

Specific incidents highlight the risks of deviating from marked paths. In the Caraiman Valley, rescuers from Bușteni (Salvamont Prahova) were called to recover two tourists who became trapped in an abrupt, steep area after leaving the designated tourist trail. The individuals were successfully brought down without further injury.

National data from the National Association of Mountain Rescuers in Romania (A.N.S.M.R.) shows that 75 Salvamont teams across 25 counties maintained a daily presence of 650–700 rescuers. While the number of interventions and rescues was slightly lower than in August 2025, the death toll saw a minor increase.
