Mountain rescue operations in Romania and Bulgaria

Overview

Mountain rescue operations and accidents continue across Romania and Bulgaria.

In Romania, fatalities and distress calls have been reported in several regions. In the Făgăraș Mountains, a 55-year-old man from Târgu Mureș died after falling approximately 200 meters into a ravine near Viștea Mare peak; police have opened a criminal investigation for manslaughter. In the Bucegi Mountains, multiple helicopter rescues were conducted, including the extraction of four exhausted tourists near Creasta Morarului and three young hikers stuck in a steep, unmarked valley near Gălbinele Valley. Additionally, a 52-year-old woman was rescued from Măgura Uroiului after her paraglider became stuck on a rock. Rescuers also responded to an SOS signal from two individuals at the Mălăieşti cabin in Valea Glăjeriei, who were confirmed safe.

During the August 2026 peak season, the National Association of Mountain Rescuers (A.N.S.M.R.) reported that 542 operations resulted in the salvation of 667 people, though 14 individuals lost their lives. Recent interventions include the rescue of two tourists in Caraiman Valley who strayed from marked trails, and the evacuation of two exhausted individuals from a via ferrata route in Cheile Galbenului, Gorj County. In the Piatra Craiului Mountains, a 50-year-old woman was airlifted from the Șaua Funduri area following a lower limb injury after weather conditions improved.

In Bulgaria, a 17-hour operation was conducted in the Rila Mountains near Chernigov Lake to evacuate an injured tourist with life-threatening injuries. Because the steep, rocky terrain and dense vegetation made stretcher transport impossible, the Bulgarian Air Force utilized a winch to hoist the individual from the site. Rescuers noted the operation successfully applied training from a joint exercise held two months prior.
