Italy workplace accidents trigger multiple manslaughter investigations

Multiple fatal workplace accidents have been reported across Italy, prompting investigations into safety standards and potential criminal negligence.

In Caivano, 61-year-old construction worker Salvatore Calignano died after falling approximately ten meters from a warehouse roof. Investigators from the Procura di Napoli Nord are examining whether he was abandoned after the fall, as he was found near a tree away from the site. Three individuals, including the employer and warehouse owners, are under investigation for manslaughter.

In Ancona, a 55-year-old Tunisian worker, Sofiane Boutraa, died following a flash fire while working in the double bottom of a cruise ship under construction at Fincantieri. An autopsy revealed fourth-degree burns over 90% of his body. Preliminary findings suggest a gas leak or oxygen escape may have caused the blaze. Authorities have opened a file for manslaughter.

Other recent incidents include a 46-year-old worker crushed by a collapsing wall at a livestock facility in Apollosa, Benevento, and a 52-year-old worker who died following a sudden medical emergency at a construction site in Bologna. In Lombardy, two separate agricultural accidents left a 79-year-old man and a 61-year-old man with serious injuries following falls from heights.
