Severe weather and fires trigger widespread emergency responses in Austria and Germany

Severe weather and localized incidents have triggered widespread emergency responses across parts of Austria and Germany. In Austria, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds caused significant disruption, particularly in Upper Austria and Salzburg. Emergency services responded to hundreds of calls involving flooded buildings, fallen trees, and water rescues on lakes such as Wallersee and Wolfgangsee. In Upper Austria alone, approximately 2,500 responders from 130 fire departments managed around 220 incidents.

The recent weather events have highlighted the critical role of volunteer firefighters in Austria, where 99 percent of the force serves on a voluntary basis. Roman Sykora, Secretary General of the World Firefighters Association, noted that Austria and Slovenia have the highest ratio of volunteers to population globally.

In Germany, heavy rainfall caused flooding in basements and underground garages in Überlingen, alongside fallen trees in several districts. Additionally, in Allendorf (Eder), authorities are investigating two simultaneous fires at a sports facility, including a tennis clubhouse and a wooden hut. Investigators are looking into whether these incidents were acts of arson, following at least ten previous suspected cases of arson in the area.
