Severe weather and flooding in Austria

Severe weather events, including heavy rainfall and intense storms, have caused significant disruption across various regions in Austria.

Initial reports focused on the Pinzgau area of Salzburg, where the Pirtendorferbach river burst its banks. This caused localized flooding, with mud and debris accumulating up to a meter high in residential properties.

As the weather patterns continued, emergency responses expanded across multiple states, including Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, and Burgenland. In Upper Austria, approximately 2,500 emergency responders managed hundreds of incidents involving flooded roads and fallen trees. In Salzburg, storms created maritime emergencies on lakes, such as a capsized sailboat on Wallersee.

The scale of the response highlighted the role of Austria’s volunteer firefighting force, which comprises 99 percent of the nation’s firefighting personnel. Roman Sykora, Secretary General of the World Firefighters Association, noted that Austria and Slovenia have the “highest ratio of volunteers to population globally.”

Recent developments confirm widespread disruption in Upper Austria and Salzburg, where responders from 130 fire departments managed approximately 220 incidents, including water rescues on lakes such as Wallersee and Wolfgangsee.
