Salzburg opens first ‘Sound of Music’ museum

A new museum dedicated to the film ‘The Sound of Music’ and the real von Trapp family has opened in Salzburg, Austria. Located at Hellbrunn Palace, the Sound of Music Salzburg is part of the Salzburg Museum and sits near the iconic glass gazebo used in the movie.

The museum features nearly 450 items, including props, costumes, movie posters, and recordings. To enhance the visitor experience, a second gazebo was constructed that allows guests to enter and view a 3D projection of the ‘Sixteen Going on Seventeen’ scene.

Exhibits are designed to distinguish between the Hollywood musical and the actual history of the von Trapp family, including their departure from Austria in 1938. Elisabeth von Trapp, daughter of original family singer Werner von Trapp, attended the opening and noted that the museum provides a sense of both the cinematic story and her family’s true history.
