Sound of Music museum opening in Salzburg

Overview

A new museum dedicated to the film ‘The Sound of Music’ and the history of the von Trapp family has opened at Hellbrunn Palace in Salzburg, Austria. As part of the Salzburg Museum, the venue serves as the first dedicated space for the 1965 Hollywood classic.

The exhibition spans 668 square meters and features approximately 477 items, including costumes, props, posters, and musical recordings. To enhance the visitor experience, the museum utilizes immersive technology, such as an experiential room with projections and sound, and a specially constructed gazebo that allows guests to view a 3D projection of the ‘Sixteen Going on Seventeen’ scene.

A central focus of the exhibits is to differentiate the fictionalized Hollywood portrayal from the actual history of the family, including their emigration to the United States following the 1938 annexation of Austria. For instance, the museum notes that the real Georg von Trapp was a submarine commander described as a “considerate, albeit much-burdened, father” rather than the strict character seen in the film.

Elisabeth von Trapp, a descendant of the family, attended the opening. She noted that the museum provides an intimate connection to both the cinematic story and her family’s true history, and she also provides guided tours of film locations throughout the city.
