Samsun municipality builds waste‑water sludge plant to produce energy

The Samsun Metropolitan Municipality, together with the water utility SASKİ, is completing a new facility at the Tekkeköy Doğu İleri Biological Waste‑Water Treatment Plant that will turn about 70 tonnes of daily sludge into energy using pyrolysis gas technology. The process heats the sludge in an oxygen‑free environment, generating usable heat and converting the resulting carbon into secondary products.

The carbon by‑product is slated for use in concrete as a mineral additive, as filler in asphalt, as an odor‑control agent in landfills, and to aid forest‑fire prevention and post‑fire rehabilitation. Mayor Halit Doğan said the project will protect the environment while delivering significant economic value and serving as a model for sustainable urban infrastructure in Turkey.
