Samsung unveils USB4-powered P9 and P7 portable SSDs

Samsung Electronics has unveiled its next-generation P Series of portable solid-state drives (SSDs), featuring USB4 connectivity. Introduced at Gamescom 2026, the lineup includes the flagship P9 and the mid-range P7, designed to handle high-resolution video, AI content, and large-scale gaming data.

The flagship P9 offers sequential read speeds of up to 4,000 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 3,800 MB/s, approximately doubling the performance of the previous generation. It is noted as the world’s first 8TB USB4 portable SSD and is capable of supporting 12K direct recording for professional workflows. The P9 received a CES 2026 Innovation Award.

The P7 is positioned for everyday use, offering similar peak speeds but with a thermal design optimized for less intensive, sustained writing operations compared to the P9. Both models are drop-resistant up to two meters. The P Series will be available in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB capacities starting in early September. Pricing for the P9 ranges from $339.99 to $2,699.99.
