San Antonio teen charged with abandoning infant at bus stop

An 18-year-old woman, Karla Ibarra, has been charged with abandoning and endangering a child after attempting to leave her one-month-old son with a stranger at a San Antonio bus stop.

According to police, Ibarra approached Jennifer Benavides at a downtown bus stop to borrow a phone. During the encounter, Ibarra reportedly attempted to hand over the infant along with his official documents, including his birth certificate, Medicaid card, and Social Security card. Benavides took the mother and child to a nearby friend's home to seek assistance, but Ibarra subsequently fled the scene in an Uber.

After the infant was cared for by Benavides and her friend, police were notified. The child was placed in the care of relatives, and Ibarra was arrested when she returned to the area later that day. Her bail was set at $7,000 by the Bexar County Court. Authorities noted that Texas provides a Safe Haven Law, also known as the Baby Moses Law, which allows parents to anonymously surrender newborns at designated safe locations.
