San Carlos increases social aid amid lack of disaster plan

The Municipality of San Carlos has distributed 4,437 social assistance grants between January and July this year, totaling an investment of $221,246,798. These funds addressed needs such as food, gas, health, housing, and basic services. This volume represents 80.9% of the total assistance provided throughout the entirety of last year.

Despite the high demand for social aid, the municipality lacks an officially approved Communal Disaster Risk Reduction Plan (PCRRD). While San Carlos has drafted an update, Senapred has labeled the proposal as ‘not technically recommended,’ preventing its official adoption. This leaves the commune without a formal roadmap for managing floods and other climate-related emergencies, even as recent storms have caused damage to roads, homes, and crops in the Ñuble region.
