San Cataldo sisters' disappearance linked to social media challenge

The Prosecutor's Office of Caltanissetta has requested the dismissal of a kidnapping investigation involving two sisters, aged 8 and 12, who disappeared in San Cataldo. Investigators determined that the children acted voluntarily to replicate a viral social media challenge seen on YouTube and other platforms.

According to the reconstruction by the Carabinieri, the girls entered a clothing store during closing hours with the intention of hiding inside to spend the night, emulating influencers who perform “24 hours in a store” challenges. Digital analysis of their devices confirmed repeated viewing of such content, which often garners millions of views.

Prosecutor Salvatore De Luca stated that the investigation excluded any involvement of third parties. However, he noted that the incident highlights the risks of uncontrolled social media access for minors and the dangers of viral challenges that encourage risky behavior. The case has prompted discussions regarding the need for stricter age verification and preventive measures for digital platforms.
