San Cataldo missing children investigation
Overview
Two sisters, aged 8 and 12, were found safe in San Cataldo, Caltanissetta, after being missing for approximately 21 hours. They were discovered inside a clothing store on Corso Vittorio Emanuele after the shop owner noticed a written plea for help on a sign. The owner reported feeling frightened upon reading the message, which prompted her to take immediate action and alert Civil Protection volunteers.
Initially, the children told rescuers, ‘They brought us here’, leading investigators to seize the premises and examine surveillance footage to determine how they entered the shop. Subsequent investigations by prosecutors in Caltanissetta revealed that the girls acted voluntarily to emulate a viral YouTube social media challenge involving influencers attempting to spend the night in commercial establishments undetected. The children had hidden in the store’s restroom during closing hours.
As a result of these findings, prosecutor Salvatore De Luca has requested to archive the investigation into potential kidnapping, as evidence suggests no third parties were involved. De Luca noted that the incident highlights the risks associated with uncontrolled social media access for minors. Following their recovery, the Caltanissetta juvenile prosecutor's office placed the two sisters in a community center alongside their four siblings as an urgent protective measure under Article 403 of the civil code. Juvenile prosecutor Rocco Cosentino issued a warning regarding internet risks, including cyberbullying and grooming, urging families and schools to educate youth on the real-world consequences of online actions.
