San Francesco Hospital in Nuoro implements new emergency care model

The San Francesco hospital in Nuoro has significantly reduced waiting times for minor emergencies through the implementation of the ‘See and Treat’ organizational model. During 150 days of morning operations, the facility treated 349 patients—90% of whom presented with minor traumas—reducing the average time from triage to discharge from five hours and 36 minutes to just 60 minutes.

The pilot program resulted in zero critical issues and only four patients requiring redirection to standard care pathways. Following these results, the regional government, led by President Alessandra Todde, has confirmed the service for the Nuoro facility and approved a protocol to extend the model across Sardinia. The model will become mandatory by January 1, 2027, for all emergency departments with more than 25,000 annual admissions, utilizing specially trained nurses to manage low-complexity cases and free up medical resources for more severe emergencies.
