Sardinia See and Treat nursing model expansion
Overview
Following successful trials at San Francesco Hospital in Nuoro, the Sardinian regional government is expanding the ‘See and Treat’ nursing model. This organizational approach empowers specially trained nurses to independently manage low-complexity patients, aiming to reduce emergency department workloads and waiting times.
Data from the pilot program indicated significant efficiency gains, with the average time from triage to discharge dropping from five hours and 36 minutes to 60 minutes. During a 150-day period, the facility treated 349 patients, 90% of whom had minor traumas, with only four patients requiring redirection to standard care pathways.
In response to these results, the regional health department plans to extend the project to other local socio-sanitary agencies. Training for operators in Oristano is scheduled for late November. The model is set to become mandatory by January 1, 2027, for all emergency departments handling more than 25,000 annual admissions.
