San Gerardo Maiella feast day observed on October 16

October 16 marks the feast day of San Gerardo Maiella, an Italian religious figure of the Redentorist Congregation. Born in Muro Lucano, he joined the order founded by Saint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori and was canonized by Pope Pius X in 1904.

Traditions surrounding his life include accounts of miracles, such as the multiplication of food during famines and a reported instance of walking on water in Naples to assist sailors. He died at the age of 29 in Caposele due to tuberculosis. He is recognized as a patron saint of Basilicata, as well as of expectant mothers, children, and various regions in Puglia, Calabria, and Lucania.

In local traditions, such as in Castellammare, his feast day is associated with community activities, including the distribution of blessed bread and the gifting of embroidered handkerchiefs to women in childbirth.
