San Gerardo Maiella commemorations

Overview

Mercato San Severino prepared an 18-day program of events to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the birth of San Gerardo Maiella. The festivities included spiritual music concerts, scholarly conferences, theatrical performances, and guided tours of the Mother House of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer in Ciorani.

Following these celebrations, the observance of San Gerardo Maiella’s feast day on October 16 highlighted his religious legacy. A member of the Redentorist Congregation canonized by Pope Pius X, he is recognized as a patron saint for various regions and groups, including expectant mothers and children. Local traditions associated with his feast day include the distribution of blessed bread and embroidered handkerchiefs.
