San Juan de la Peña monasteries reopen following forest fire
The San Juan de la Peña monasteries and the Hospedería are resuming activities this Saturday, October 31, following a mandatory closure caused by the Peñas de Riglos forest fire. The fire, which began on August 10 and lasted until September 12, had necessitated the temporary relocation of historical remains.
Reopening allows for guided tours of the Old Monastery, including the Royal Pantheon, which recently saw the return of the remains of the first Aragonese kings. These relics had been moved to the Huesca Museum in August to protect them from the fire threat. Visitors can also access the New Monastery and the Interpretation Center freely.
While catering and cafeteria services at the Hospedería will resume, the facility is entering its winter closure period. Consequently, overnight accommodations in the 25 guest rooms will be unavailable from November through March. Specific visiting hours have been established for the upcoming holiday weekend and the subsequent winter months.
