San Juan de la Peña monastery fire and recovery
Overview
The San Juan de la Peña monasteries and Hospedería faced mandatory closure due to the Peñas de Riglos forest fire, which burned from August 10 until September 12. As a preventive measure against the fire threat, the remains of the first kings of Aragon and other royal lineage members were evacuated to the Huesca Museum on August 13.
Following a 74 day period of custody in Huesca, the Aragonese government returned the royal remains to the Royal Pantheon of the Monastery of San Juan de la Peña during a ceremony attended by regional officials.
The monastery complex is scheduled to resume activities on October 31. Reopening includes guided tours of the Old Monastery, the New Monastery, and the Interpretation Center. While catering services will resume, the Hospedería will enter its winter closure period, meaning overnight accommodations will be unavailable from November through March.
