San Juan de la Peña monastery artifacts rescued from Spanish wildfires
Severe wildfires in Spain have forced the emergency evacuation of approximately 1,000 people and the urgent rescue of priceless historical artifacts. In the Aragón region, a fire near Las Peñas de Riglos has burned between 10,000 and 11,000 hectares, threatening the ancient San Juan de la Peña monastery.
Spain’s Military Emergency Unit (UME) conducted a high-risk operation to save the remains of the first three kings of Aragón—Ramiro I, Sancho Ramírez, and Pedro I—along with centuries-old artwork, jewelry, and historical garments. The remains were successfully transferred to the Huesca Provincial Museum for protection.
In addition to the Aragón fires, another major blaze in Huelva has consumed 31,000 hectares. Authorities have arrested a 28-year-old man suspected of starting the Las Peñas de Riglos fire, potentially at a construction material storage site. This season has seen an exceptionally high number of hectares destroyed across the country.
