Argentina's primary schools improve reading scores, lag in math

The national Aprender 2025 assessment of sixth‑grade students showed a decade‑best performance in reading, with 76.9% of pupils reaching satisfactory or advanced levels, while math results remained modest at 55% meeting expectations. Provincial results varied: Buenos Aires recorded 77.4% in reading and 56.3% in math, Córdoba 82.4% and 64.3% respectively, and Mendoza reported its strongest reading score in 13 years and a reversal of the math decline. Other provinces such as San Juan, Formosa and Mendoza also posted gains above the national average. The data highlighted persistent gaps linked to socioeconomic status and school management, with private schools outperforming public ones and disadvantaged students improving but still lagging. Provincial governments attributed the advances to local education policies and investments, contesting the national government's suggestion that the results stem from the Plan Nacional de Alfabetización. All parties noted that despite progress, mathematics remains a challenge that will require continued focus.
