San Juan to host REFRES workshop on waste management
San Juan will host the first REFRES Strategic Workshop, titled ‘Redesigning the Future of Waste’, on September 9 and 10. The event aims to bring together scientists from CONICET, environmental authorities, and local business leaders to discuss transforming waste into productive resources through circular economy principles.
Santiago Ceballos, the Undersecretary of Urban Solid Waste, stated that the initiative seeks to implement new technologies for intelligent waste classification. The goal is to reduce the volume of trash sent to landfills by reintroducing materials into new economic cycles.
The workshop addresses the environmental challenges posed by San Juan’s rapid economic development. The province is anticipating significant population growth driven by large-scale mining projects projected through 2030, as well as expansion in the tourism and agro-industrial sectors, including tomato and olive production.
