San Luis political leaders challenge constitutional reform and UCR internal election rulings

Political tension is rising in San Luis, Argentina, involving both internal party disputes and challenges to provincial constitutional reform. Leaders from the Identidad Radical faction are preparing a legal challenge before the Superior Tribunal of Justice to declare the partial constitutional reform proposed by Governor Claudio Poggi unconstitutional.

The proposed reform seeks to extend the terms of legislators who assumed office in 2025 until 2031, aligning legislative renewals with gubernatorial elections and effectively eliminating mid-term elections. Critics, including Daniel Mariani, argue the reform lacks consensus from legal professionals, educators, and the general public.

Simultaneously, the Unión Cívica Radical (UCR) is facing a judicial battle regarding its internal elections. Federal Judge Juan Esteban Maqueda ruled that the Identidad Radical faction's List 10 may continue in the internal race, partially overturning a previous decision by the party's Electoral Board that had excluded them. However, the ruling maintained the exclusion of ten specific candidacies. The dispute centers on allegations of proscription and procedural irregularities during the nomination process.
