Argentina opposition party mobilization

In late July 2026, the Unión Cívica Radical (UCR) held renewal meetings in Santa Fe and Tres Arroyos, installing new provincial leaders and stressing internal integration and youth participation. A week later, political activity intensified with La Cámpora’s Lincoln branch staging a diversity-focused rally in Hurlingham on 1 August, followed by a UCR provincial gathering in La Plata on 8 August to outline an opposition platform against Governor Axel Kicillof.

On 8 August, the UCR announced the completion of its institutional normalization in the Province of Buenos Aires. Following a convention in La Plata, Pablo Nicoletti was elected president of the Provincial Convention, with Emiliano Balbín and Josefina Mendoza named president and vice president of the Provincial Committee, respectively.

However, the normalization process was marked by a significant internal split. A faction known as "Construir," led by former mayor Miguel Fernández and including provincial deputy Alejandra Lordén, officially broke away from the party leadership. This group, which includes at least twelve mayors and various legislators, withdrew from the convention after failing to reach an agreement regarding the distribution of party posts, specifically within the Electoral Board. The "Construir" group indicated they intend to challenge the leadership from outside the formal organizational structure.

Despite this fracture, Emiliano Balbín outlined a strategic roadmap to contest political power throughout the province, and National Senator Maximiliano Abad emphasized that the organized structure positions the UCR to build a government alternative for the 2027 elections. The party also signaled support for political reforms, including the separation of provincial and national elections, the implementation of single-use paper ballots, and limits on indefinite reelection.
