San Luis Potosí launches 17 million peso plan against cattle screwworm

The government of San Luis Potosí has launched the Cattle Screwworm Suppression Program to protect the state's livestock. The initiative involves an investment of 17 million pesos, managed by Governor Ricardo Gallardo Cardona and implemented by the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (Senasica).

The plan deploys 15 work fronts consisting of 30 specialists and technicians to install traps designed to capture female flies, thereby reducing reproduction rates of the Cochliomyia hominivorax species. This action serves as a preliminary stage to a broader eradication strategy involving the release of sterile flies.

Operations will begin in priority areas such as Ciudad del Maíz, specifically in the Nuevo Centro de Población Papagayos. The program includes the use of 15 vehicles for the installation, monitoring, and follow-up of traps throughout the state to improve livestock health and contain the plague.
