San Martín dengue outbreak reaches 7,000 cases and 15 deaths
Dengue fever cases have exceeded 7,000 in the San Martín region of Peru, resulting in at least 15 deaths. While vaccination efforts are underway in Moyobamba—reaching over 4,000 people including children and adolescents in schools—the province of San Martín has not yet been included in the current dose distribution.
Health authorities report that the risk remains high in districts like Tarapoto due to environmental conditions conducive to mosquito breeding, such as accumulated water in containers and gutters. The Oficina de Gestión de Servicios de Salud Bajo Mayo has reported over 100 infections in its jurisdiction, with a significant number of cases involving children and adolescents.
Medical officials are urging the public to seek early treatment for symptoms including high fever, headache, nausea, and skin rashes to prevent severe complications. The current strategy focuses on early detection, vector control, and targeted vaccination across five provinces.
