San Pedro Garza García residents face backlash for using nail-studded boards to deter bears

Residents of the Olinalá neighborhood in San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León, have sparked controversy by distributing and installing wooden boards with nails to prevent black bears from entering their homes. The measure was taken after a bear was filmed entering a residence and raiding a refrigerator.

Parques y Vida Silvestre de Nuevo León issued a statement urging residents to immediately remove the boards, warning that the practice poses a significant risk of injury to wildlife, pets, and humans. The black bear is a species listed as endangered in Mexico.

Environmental activist Daniel Borrego announced intentions to report the case to the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), stating that those who affect biodiversity must face legal consequences. Authorities plan to conduct a technical visit to the area to provide guidance on proper waste management and food storage to prevent future bear encounters.
