Black bear sightings and conflict in northern Mexico

Authorities in northern Mexico, specifically in Coahuila and Nuevo León, have issued safety warnings following increased black bear sightings near residential and tourist areas. In Coahuila, officials have reinforced prevention measures and advised the public to avoid feeding or approaching the protected species. In Nuevo León, experts warned that social media trends and human interference are driving bears into urban environments, such as residential pools and trash areas.

Conflict escalated in the San Pedro Garza García municipality of Nuevo León after residents in the Olinalá neighborhood began installing wooden boards with nails to deter bears from entering homes. This measure followed an incident where a bear was filmed raiding a refrigerator. The organization Parques y Vida Silvestre de Nuevo León warned that these boards pose risks to humans, pets, and wildlife. Environmental activists have indicated plans to report the matter to the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), while authorities prepare to provide guidance on waste management to prevent further encounters.
