Sandro Mazzola, Inter Milan and Italy legend, dies at 83
Sandro Mazzola, a legendary figure of Inter Milan and the Italian national team, has died at the age of 83. A lifelong icon for the Nerazzurri, Mazzola spent his entire 17-season professional career with the club, making 565 appearances and scoring 158 goals.
As a central pillar of the celebrated ‘Grande Inter’ era under manager Helenio Herrera, he helped lead the club to four Serie A titles, two European Cups, and two Intercontinental Cups. His individual accolades include being the Serie A top scorer in 1965 and finishing second in the 1971 Ballon d'Or voting behind Johan Cruyff.
On the international stage, Mazzola earned 70 caps for Italy, winning the 1968 European Championship and playing a key role in the 1970 World Cup final. His footballing legacy was deeply personal; he was the son of Valentino Mazzola, the captain of the legendary Torino side who perished in the Superga air disaster in 1949.
Following his passing, tributes have poured in from football figures, including Massimiliano Allegri and Fabio Capello, as well as Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who described him as a “great champion” who left an indelible mark on the nation.
