Sanlúcar de Barrameda horse races begin 181st edition
The 181st edition of the Sanlúcar de Barrameda horse races has commenced at Las Piletas beach. This international tourist interest event features thoroughbred racing on the sand near the mouth of the Guadalquivir river.
The first cycle of races includes two periods in August. During the opening days, several winners were recorded, including Never Ever in the Memorial Jesús Ruiz Berlanga prize, The Whipmaster in the Grupo Indeso prize, and Mangaken in the Diputación Provincial de Cádiz prize. The second day saw victories by Flight Leader and Machu Pichu.
Almudena Martínez del Junco, president of the Diputación de Cádiz, highlighted the event as a vital economic and tourism driver for the province. The institution provides 110,000 euros in support, with 8,500 euros dedicated to specific prizes. The races are expected to attract approximately 45,000 people, boosting local hospitality, commerce, and employment. The event also aspires to be recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
