Sanlúcar de Barrameda horse racing festival
Overview
The 181st edition of the Sanlúcar de Barrameda horse racing festival is underway at Las Piletas beach. As the oldest horse racing tradition in Spain, dating back to 1845, the events are uniquely dictated by the tides, utilizing the wet, compacted sand revealed during low tide to create a temporary racetrack.
In preparation for the festival, Mayor Carmen Álvarez and Rafael Hidalgo, president of the Real Sociedad de Carreras de Caballos, reviewed venue enhancements including improved signage, unified furniture, and better access for those with reduced mobility. Additionally, the municipality launched a new sign-language interpretation service in partnership with the Association of Deaf Persons Guadalquivir (Apesorgu) to improve accessibility for cultural activities and institutional events.
The racing season is divided into two cycles. The initial August cycle saw winners such as Never Ever, The Whipmaster, Mangaken, Flight Leader, and Machu Pichu. The competition is now entering its second seasonal cycle, which includes major events such as the Grandes Premios de Andalucía and Ciudad de Sanlúcar.
Recognized as a Festival of International Tourist Interest, the event is a significant economic driver. Almudena Martínez del Junco, president of the Diputación de Cádiz, noted the festival’s role in boosting local commerce, hospitality, and employment. The Diputación provides 110,000 euros in support, with 8,500 euros allocated to prizes. The event is expected to attract approximately 45,000 people and maintains aspirations for recognition as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
