SANRAL investigates Moriel Infrastructure Group following viral video
The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) is investigating Moriel Infrastructure Group following a viral video showing the company’s founder, Lawrence Mudzinganyama, making threats of violence against women at a Sandton restaurant. The incident has led to criminal charges of intimidation against Mudzinganyama, who has since issued an unreserved apology and committed to a conflict-management programme.
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has ordered an investigation into whether Moriel was lawfully appointed to its government contracts and whether it is fulfilling its obligations. SANRAL confirmed it holds two active contracts with the group for projects on the N1 and N2 highways.
In response to social media claims, SANRAL also addressed allegations linking its Gauteng provincial head, Progress Hlahla, to the controversial contracts. The agency clarified that Hlahla, a Zimbabwean national and qualified civil engineer, was not responsible for the Moriel projects, noting that neither of the company’s two active projects falls within the Gauteng province.
